I’ve just been listening to “Happy Woman Blues” by Lucinda Williams and it’s fantastic. It’s a very early album, and similar in sound to her highly acclaimed album, “Lucinda Williams”. If you’re a fan, there are a few tracks you’ll recognise, and the version of “I’ve Lost It” is superb and stands up well against the later version you can hear on “Car Wheels on a Gravel Road”. There’s also one track in particular on this album that is incredibly suggestive of Gram Parsons.
Personally, while I’ve enjoyed them, I’ve never found her later albums quite as appealing as “Lucinda Williams”, so this early album is wonderful to discover. The only thing that lets it down is the production, which lacks some depth. In all, highly recommended, if only to see where this interesting artist was coming from all those years ago.
