I’ve just added a new gallery to the pictures. It’s small at the moment, but I hope it’ll grow. It’s pictures of buildings I like and I reckon it will pull together some bits and pieces that would have been forced into other galleries in the past.
London is such a great place to live for interesting architecture and I really do appreciate it. Our flat is in sight of the new Swiss Re building (aka The Gherkin) and we watched it going up. We’ve also got City Hall just a couple of minutes walk away, which I find oddly unsatisfying for such a potentially exciting building. For some reason, the curves don’t curve enough and I feel the building doesn’t quite live up to its idea.
Tower Bridge and the Tower of London are also right here, and the contrast between the old, established buildings and the new architecture is quite striking. The Gherkin really does overshadow Tower Bridge, for example.
I’ve heard that Ken is in favour the shard of glass at London Bridge and I understand it’s had the planning go-ahead. I’m in two minds about it. On the one hand, it sounds exciting, interesting and potentially great for the area. On the other hand, I fear it will increase the local divide between those who have and those who have not. Already, it is striking how the pubs and restaurants in this area split into those targetting residents of the local council estates (pizza take away) and those targetting residents of the local ‘loft’ apartments (gastro pubs).
