Yo, why didnt you tell me about this just now??? Well proud. Defo right thing to do. At the very minimum you made at least one person think twice about what they were doing. And I wouldnt be so sure about people not stopping to help, I walked past 2 fights last week, and as soon as they got actually violent, a whole pile of people jumped in to stop it.
You should prob report to the police though you know, give them a description of said bike stealers. They do it cause they get away with it, cause most people dont know what people who steal their things look like. You do. It would be the City of London police...

Jemima,
Just a idea.. get in touch with the local safer neighbourhood team for that area. They shall know if a crime has been reported and I would imagine be very interested to talk with you in the view of catching these youths.
On another note thanks for the advice on mud guards for the Jack thats how I found your site.

Hi Jo,

Yes, I did contact Waitrose. I emailed them as soon as I got home, asking for clarification about their policy (why didn't they call the police when they were alerted to the incident?) and asking them to pass on my details should anyone be in touch about it. The response so far has been somewhat pathetic - a reiteration that the area is not their responsibility and a reassurance that they would call the police if an incident did arise (which I have queried, since that didn't seem to happen on Friday). I should probably contact the local police direct, though, since I don't think Waitrose are engaging with this at all.

Jemima,
There is no right or wrong in the way you dealt with the incident. I am afraid that the majority of the public dont confront these youths and this is why they have this bold approach and get away with it. Be proud of what you had done. It may be worth speaking to management at waitrose to see if the victim of the bike has made enquires or if the police have. You could be a vital lead in finding these youths.
