Dim

Sarah is working on a Welsh-language play that is touring Wales. Sarah doesn’t speak Welsh, but the rest of the team do, which makes life interesting. For example, this exchange with one of Sarah’s colleagues on her first day:

Colleague: So, do you speak any Welsh at all?
Sarah: No, I’m afraid not.
Colleage: Dim.
Sarah: Um, yes.

The colleague then explains that ‘dim’ means ‘nothing’ in Welsh.

    the obvious answer to that would have been “sum”.

    oh, my warped sense of humour has got the better of me again.
